"Dad, I have a question..."

I wasn't anticipating it.

Capital markets teach you a lot about reading the room, spotting trends, and staying ahead.

You have to be nimble, anticipate things, and be ready to act on a moment’s notice.

But nothing trains you for:

Dad, I have a question…
…You’re tall.

A statement, not a question, from my three-year-old.

I had a dozen possible follow-ups ready to go, but this wasn’t one of them.

That’s the thing.

You’re always trying to stay one step ahead in high-stress, high-stakes jobs.

But kids (and dogs, too) don’t follow the script.

They catch you off guard, in the best (and weirdest) ways.

And in doing that, they pull you out of the race and into the moment.

They don’t care about your track record or your resume.

They just want you to listen to their statement-question, watch their magic trick, or see their attempt at a cartwheel.

They’re more concerned with the “watch me, Dad” moments that pull you out of your stress and into the now.

Capital markets are complex.

But sometimes, the wisdom you’ve been searching for walks into the living room wearing a mismatched outfit, asking for a cookie at 7 a.m.

They don’t just remind you what matters, they teach you.

Presence. Simplicity. Being where your feet are.

Those are keys to life in general and how you approach your work.

The lessons we learn from our kids don’t show up in the Bloomberg terminal, but they stick with you longer than any closing bell.

See you next month,

— Andrew
